Cameron Norrie earned the most important win of his career by coming back from a early deficit to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.
While he had previously beaten Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this victory signifies Norrie's maiden success over a current world top-ranked player.
"Massive. Extremely important for me," said Norrie, who is now the latest English competitor in history to beat a global number one. "Bouncing back from health issues last year, I was defeated in the opening stage of qualifiers here. I just tried to appreciate my tennis in the latter part of the year. To get a triumph like this, it's the most significant victory of my tennis journey, my initial victory over the top player and probably the strongest athlete in the world right now."
Norrie, positioned No 31, also halted Alcaraz's supreme run of nine straight final appearances and 17 consecutive Masters 1000 wins, which marked the top run of results in the young champion's young professional path.
Match Breakdown
The top seed appeared to be progressing easily to a win at the start as he sailed through the initial stanza. Yet, the British contender slowly battled back back into the game by executing with improved accuracy and pulling the Spaniard into prolonged, demanding exchanges. His unceasing shot tolerance and dependability steadily made an impact.
For much of the match, Alcaraz performed well on serve but he struggled badly to find his timing with his rally strokes. The 22-year-old appeared especially uneasy striking his signature shot, which has been the top weapon in the game for most of this year, producing 29 forehand unforced errors and a total of 54 mistakes. On the other side, Norrie offered Alcaraz so few mistakes, sustaining his reliability, fitness and power the entire contest while performing well on serve and picking his spots to move inside the baseline and strike effectively.
Decisive Phase
In the tight closing stages, the British competitor brilliantly maintained his calm to defeat the world's finest in the sport.
Professional Journey
After struggling for a long time due to a serious physical setback and struggles with his form, the tennis professional fell as low as 91st in the rankings this year. Having reached the last eight at Wimbledon and the Roland Garros round of 16 after that, this victory reinforces the 30-year-old's improvement as he aims to come back to the world's top twenty and further. The Spanish sensation, despite his extraordinary achievements, is has not yet solve how to deliver his top form in indoor conditions.
