Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Charity

Passing on unwanted offerings could be seen as slightly impolite – except if it's done in the proper manner.

A Charitable Clear-Out

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, will offload a reported 270 gifts given to her by international figures while abroad. This unusual assortment is said to contain gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.

These items, combined, are worth an estimated €800,000. They are scheduled to be auctioned off to the highest bidder by a Rome-based fine art auction house. An exact timeline has not been finalized, although the intention is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with all funds raised benefiting various charities.

Storage Room Collection

The presents are said to be locked away in a repository on the third floor of the government headquarters. It has been reported that Meloni additionally considering auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust over a long period.

The full gift list is yet to be officially released, but a glimpse was gleaned earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was presented in parliament. The question raised if a legal value limit was being honored. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents worth more than €300.

An International Array of Gifts

Among the items:

  • A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A sari from Kerala from India's prime minister.
  • A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A digital device from the Ukrainian president.
  • Paintings from Moldova.
  • An assortment including makeup, a board, and several rugs received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Maybe the most unusual gifts were the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," observers have said.

Political Backdrop

Supporters have applauded Meloni, mostly from within her party, with building relationships with international counterparts and positioning Italy as a key protagonist on the world stage once again.

This unique auction symbolizes a unconventional way to deal with the diplomatic artifacts that accumulate during a leader's tenure.
