Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride to Proceed During FIFA Tournament Despite Objections by Iran and Egypt

Arrangements to hold LGBTQ+ rights events and activities throughout the city amid the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament are proceeding as scheduled, even after Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations voiced objections about a scheduled “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy Alongside City Celebrations

Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “moving forward as planned” with celebratory programming in the city center. These events will take place around the tournament group fixture featuring Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Furthermore, the tournament's governing body will permit Pride flags to be brought into the match venue.

“As the local organising committee, our primary task is to get the city ready to host the matches and manage the city experience outside of Seattle Stadium,” stated the vice-president of communications.

Legal Background of Objections

Homosexuality is illegal under Iranian law, while in Egypt, morality laws are often used to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association stated it did not want to be linked to celebrations that “directly contradict the cultural, religious and social values
in Islamic and Arab societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation publicly registered “its opposition against the issue.”

The Governing Body's Position Regarding Symbols

The international federation holds full authority of stadiums during games. Although its rules forbid banners and flags with overtly political content, it permits flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This policy was in effect at the previous World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of flags being seized.

  • This special fixture was an idea created to highlight the city's proud history of advocating for equality.
  • A design contest has been commissioned to create images celebrating the occasion.
  • Planners have pledged to ensuring every visitor are welcomed in the Pacific Northwest during the tournament.

The region hosts a significant largest Iranian-American communities, a vibrant Egyptian expatriate community, and diverse populations representing all nations. “Our commitment is to ensuring everyone experience the hospitality, dignity, and respect that characterizes our region,” the statement added.
