🔗 Share this article The Battle Royale's Niche Movement Mechanics Become Widely Accessible This Season The game developers have a special treat prepared for the popular battle royale players, arriving just in time for festive season. Fans of this game's super-slick movement will be pleased to discover that an innovative traversal feature is being implemented when Season 27: Amped goes live on November 4th. Introducing Mantle Boosting Named "Momentum Boosting" by Respawn, this ability provides gamers a surge of forward momentum when climbing over ledges and walls. As explained key developer Eric Canavese, this technique has unofficially existed of the game for some time, often called as "mantle jumping." But it's challenging for casual gamers, and typically employed by competitive players in competitive play or esports competitions. In this update, Respawn simplifies the process for players of all skill levels to successfully perform these advanced speed-boosts. "This technique have been in the game for some time, but executing it requires skill to pull off and a player would never know it [is in the game] without outside knowledge," Canavese states. "We're adding a visual cue so users can clearly identify the timing to activate the fast-paced traversal skill, making accessible the feature and introducing new ways to play for a much wider base." Why Opening Up Advanced Mechanics Why make a previously obscure technique accessible to everyone? Principal designer the development lead explains the team wants players to feel powerful — including ones who are inexperienced. "Our community performs advanced techniques like super-gliding and tap-strafes, and we looked around at other games, looked at what our players are doing, and we wondered, 'How can we provide these capabilities to more players?'" Mohan explains. "Since right now, some of these techniques are somewhat awkward to use — you need to remap your keybinds and hit precise timings. So we said, 'What if we create a polished version?'" The Amped Update Movement Focus Movement is primarily the central theme in this season, with Legends the gravity mage, the defensive specialist, and Valkyrie receiving enhancements to maintain them in motion. Recovery time on Horizon's Gravity Lift is shorter, and the Gravity Lift will propel players into the air faster than before. Her defensive walls now include a roof and capability to grant movement bonuses to those nearby. However the spotlight is on the high-flying Valkyrie who's getting the most attention this season, with multiple tweaks applied to make her more potent, faster, and deadlier. "I think there's quite a consensus that her moment has arrived," says Legend designer the designer. "There's no doubt she was top-tier previously, but due to the addition of new Legends, mobility perks, and redeployment tools, it seemed like she's not very relevant in today's Apex. It was a really great opportunity for us to reexamine a bunch of aspects in her abilities and essentially bring her back to former prominence." Enhancements to the Aerial Legend To reclaim Valkyrie's relevance in the game's meta, Holstead notes the team evaluated each of her abilities and implemented significant modifications. Her VTOL Jets have been upgraded, boosting her speed during flight, and this equipment regenerates three times faster, allowing her to spend more time aloft. She can no longer be harmed from her ultimate ability, which has also been upgraded to mark enemies who take damage from it. Her squad redeploy ability — which launches her entire squad skyward for repositioning or escape — requires much less time to activate. Additionally, she gains recently added Legend Upgrades that players can choose to reduce fuel consumption, widen the area of her Missile Swarm, or further speed up her Skyward Dive takeoff time. "Valkyrie's equipment fulfills that jet-fighter fantasy," Holstead comments. Map Changes Even the game's lone airborne map, Olympus, receives a mobility-focused facelift, with major changes that expands choke points and renders securing elevated positions more manageable. The developers state the game Season 27 is all about providing gamers the tools required to compete in the competition. "Essentially, we examined Apex's fundamental nature as a fast-paced FPS," says lead Legend designer the lead. The battle royale the Amped season releases November 4th at the specified times.
