The Boss Maresca Labels Lead-Up Period as His 'Worst 48 Hours' with the Club

Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca revealed that the preparation to Saturday's victory against Everton constituted "the most challenging 48 hours" of his tenure at Stamford Bridge.

The 44-year-old made a puzzling comment in his after-game interview even after earning a 2-0 win at home courtesy of finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those points sent Chelsea once again into the English top flight's top four, perhaps improving the mood after a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the side's winless run to four outings.

However, when asked about the full-back's contribution and overall performance, Maresca surprisingly divulged his annoyance over the previous two days at the organization.

"The way the players want to learn has been superb and this is the reason why I commend them - because with numerous problems, they are excelling after a difficult week," he said.

"Since I joined the club, the previous 48 hours have been the toughest because a lot of people failed to back us."

Pressed on what he meant, the ex- Leicester City manager added: "Most difficult 48 hours since I came to the club because people didn't support me and the team."

When questioned if he meant people within at Chelsea, he responded: "In general. In general," before clarifying when queried if it was directed towards supporters or the media: "I adore the fans and we are very happy with the fans."

Injury and Disciplinary Crisis

Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's persistent fitness and disciplinary problems, noting they had been missing star attacker Cole Palmer for much of the campaign, in addition to losing linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and striker Liam Delap to two significant injuries.

"I truly applaud the players and the squad because we played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them without Moises Caicedo, eleven of them minus Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them minus Liam Delap," he explained.

"And this squad, no matter who is on the pitch, they are doing brilliantly. Today was 5 games in 12 days so undoubtedly when you see Cole Palmer available, we have said many times that he's our finest player but we play almost all season without our best player.

"We play five games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so delighted for the players and it's something that I would want people outside to recognize because the work from the players is outstanding."

Chelsea's triumph over Everton cemented their standing in 4th place in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle to come in the coming days.

Speculation Regarding Maresca's Remark

It was unclear who or what prompted Maresca to describe the past 48 hours as the most difficult of his time as Chelsea manager.

In that period, the Italian had traveled back with his staff and players from his native Italy, conducted a session at Cobham, faced a pre-match news conference where he appeared at ease, and secured a victory over an high-flying Everton side.

It was not obvious whether any specific media reports had unsettled him, if online comments were a factor, or if it was something more significant from inside the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca specifically took care to deny that it was an issue involving the club's supporters, some of whom have still have yet to fully warm to him since his arrival from Leicester in July 2024.
