The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

At least 16 people were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local police are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the events before the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
