Get ready, because every year beginning in 1999, Pantone chooses a defining hue. This selection aims to capture the spirit of the times—informing everything from our emotions and our wardrobe selections to home decor. Last year's selection was the deep beige "a coffee-inspired shade," preceded by the soft and warm "a delicate peach tone."

The latest choice, however, is particularly baffling. It is "a billowy white," which Pantone calls a "ethereal and neutral white."

Laurie Pressman, the vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, stated that it is "a key structural color … allowing all colors to be highlighted."

Well, Cloud Dancer sounds… seriously, white? Is this a prank? Is white even a real color?

How does one define the hue of a cloud? Milk? Even though people often think of white as a color, all color is at its core a perception of light wavelengths. You can find it in a child's crayon box, so I'd argue the answer is yes.

The question of whether Pantone is out of touch is trickier to figure out. According to their release, Cloud Dancer combines easily with other colors, isn't overstimulating, declares simplicity, and radiates subtle elegance.

Responses from critics, however, has been less complimentary. A number of observers have declared Pantone of being completely "out of touch." Fashion and trend forecaster Mandy Lee called it "underwhelming." Some have even compared it with implied endorsement of controversial ideas seen in other media.

I see, one would hope they're blissfully unaware that now is a sensitive time to be pointedly celebrating whiteness... So, how should I not exactly adjacent to a fashion show apply this trend in daily life? I recently coated my ceiling in white paint, does that count?
